Surrender to God: The Way Into Rest

You know those moments when God repeats Himself until we pause long enough to listen? Here's what that looked like for me.

I had noticed some of my friends prayed over a word for the year. That wasn’t something I had ever intentionally pursued. But as the year unfolded, there was a word that kept coming to mind - not because I was searching for it, but because it seemed to keep finding me.

At first, I simply noticed it. And then I began to pay attention.

That attentiveness deepened during a short weekend away. Within the first hour of checking into a bed and breakfast, the same word met me three different times - once through a song, once through a text from a friend, and once through a biblical encouragement post on Instagram. By then, it was clear. God had my attention.

The word was surrender.

So I began to sit with it, asking the Lord what He was inviting me into.

In Scripture, surrender carries the image of yielding - like an army laying down its resistance before a conqueror. But God is not a harsh victor. He conquers to bless. Where surrender to the world often leads to loss, surrender to God leads to freedom.

To surrender is to let go of control and place our lives, desires, and futures into God’s hands. It is choosing to trust His leading and obey His direction, even when the path ahead feels uncertain. Surrender is not a one-time moment, but a daily choice - living under Christ’s lordship with humility and faith. It is a willingness to align our lives with His purposes rather than asking Him to align with ours.

And surrender is not defeat.

In God’s Kingdom, surrender gives way to victory.

When we surrender to God, spiritual growth follows - a deep alignment with His will. That alignment brings peace and rest. Not because circumstances instantly change, but because our hearts are no longer striving to control what only God can.

Scripture plays a vital role in shaping a surrendered heart. Regular time in God’s Word - reading, meditating, and sitting quietly before Him - realigns our desires and actions with biblical truth. Over time, surrender becomes less about release and more about trust.

I am still learning what this looks like in practice. But I am beginning to see that surrender is not the end of something - it is the beginning of walking more closely with God, under His care, and within His perfect will.

By the end of that weekend, I realized God was inviting me to make surrender my word for the year - a daily reminder to trust, release, and follow Him.

Prayer:

Lord, teach me what it means to surrender fully to You. Where I cling to control, help me trust. Where I resist, help me soften. Align my heart with Your purposes, and lead me in Your way. Amen.
